I just got back from the Cecada show at Ida Red. I listened to some of the music beforehand on their MySpace page and knew that I would really like them. I was very pleased with what I heard. They really played together instead of competing for who would be the loudest or most prominent. It all worked together to create a really great sound.

Cooperation for the benefit of the music is a quality of great bands that most locals never reach. Most bands don’t know that is what they need to do and the rest aren’t really sure how to get there but when it works it works well. My favorite example of this is when I saw Portishead in Dallas. The singer’s voice is so soft that it could easily be swallowed up by almost anything. So that the music came through the rest of the band barely played at all, like they were trying to not wake a baby sleeping on the stage. It was wonderfully subtle.

Cecada isn’t subtle but the sounds all go together to make Cecada instead of a singer, a few guitars, a banjo and some drums all playing at the same time. They will have an Artist Sessions episode in about a week.
